The Hundred-Year Old Muse

Miklós Radnóti (1909-1944) is one of the most popular Hungarian poets of all time. He died during the Holocaust, but his wife and muse, Fanni Gyarmati is still alive. Fanni was born on September 8, 1927, into a Hungarian bourgeois family. She is described by friends as a stunningly pretty and intelligent girl who loved travelling and poety. She also got a degree in French and Russian after the Second World War. She was an impressively culturated lady.

First she worked as a stenography teacher at a school founded by her father, namely Dezső Gyarmati. Later on she moved on to teach French at a theater arts college.

Miklós and Fanni met when they were 17 and 14 respectively, but he had lied about his age, saying he was 18, in an attempt to impress her. No one thought their romance would last long but they proved them all wrong. Their love for each other only deepened, and they married on August 11, 1935. They settled down on Pozsonyi Street 1 in Budapest. Fanni lives there to this very day, and the sign on the house says: “Dr Miklós Radnóti.”

Her relationship with Miklós was based on mutual love and respect. She was his equal in every aspect. She was not only his equal, she was also his most precious friend and most honest critic. She has inspired perhaps the most beautiful love poems in Hungarian literature.

Fanni is a hundred-years old today. God bless this amazing Lady!

A Százéves Múzsa

Radnóti Miklós az egyik legnépszerűbb magyar író. Sajnálatos módon meghalt a Holokausztban, de felesége és múzsája, Gyarmati Fanni még ma is él. Ez a cikk róla és a Radnótival folytatott életéről szól. (Ha Radnótiról is még többet akartok megtudni, kattintsatok ide.)

Fanni 1927-ben született szeptember 8-án egy polgári család lányaként. A barátai egy tündöklően szép, intelligens lánynak írják le, aki a költészet és az utazás szerelmese. A második világ háború után diplomát is szerzett francia- és orosz nyelvből. Fanni először egy apja, Gyarmati Dezső, által alapított iskolában kezdett el gyorsírótanárként dolgozni, majd később a színművészeti főiskolára ment át franciát tanítani.

Fanni 14 éves korában találkozott Miklóssal, aki akkor 17 volt, de mivel imponálni akart a lánynak, ezért 18-nak hazudta magát. Senki sem gondolta, hogy a diákszerelmnek indult kapcsolat sokáig tart majd, de minden szkeptikust megcáfolva szerelmük egyre mélyült, míg 1935-ben, augusztus 11-én össze nem házasodtak. Még az esküvő napján beköltöztek a Pozsonyi utca 1-be, ahol Fanni ma ünnepelhette a századik születésnapját. A ház kapuján még mindig a következő névtábla áll: Dr Radnóti Miklós.

A Miklóssal való kapcsolata kölcsönös szerelmen és tiszteleten alapult. Fanni egyben volt a költő egyenjogú partnere, legdrágább barátja és legőszintébb kritikusa is. A legszebb magyar szerelmi verseket, mint például a Két karodban vagy a Levél a hitveshez, is ő inspirálta.

Istán áldja továbbra is Gyarmati Fannit, ezt a lenyűgöző hölgyet!

Heroes Square is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest, Hungary. It is located right between Andrássy Avenue and City Park. Its perfect replica can be found in China, 30 km from Shanghai, right next to the perfect replica of the Gate of Bradenburg and the perfect replicas of other famous buildings and sites in Global Paradise.

Unfortunately, Global Paradise didn’t turn out to be the popular tourist attraction it was meant to be, and the original Heroes Square is in much better condition (since Global Paradise had been abandoned, for it had failed to fulfill its purpose), but we can still congratulate the Chinese on their skills, as it is hard to differentiate between the original and the copy.

Sajnos a Global Paradise nem vált olyan népszerű turista látványossággá, mint ahogy azt a készítői eltervezték, és az eredeti Hősök tere is jobb állapotban van (mivel a Global Paradise-t bukása után jelentősen elhanyagolták), de ettől függetlenül még így is nehéz megkülönböztetni az eredetit a másolattól.
